The Welsh Society of Vancouver can trace its roots back to 1908 when the first Welsh Society, "The Cymrodorion Society", was formed in Vancouver by Welsh immigrants and their descendants. This group was instrumental in introducing Welsh culture and tradition to their new country. The choir has grown from eighteen to over one hundred singers and now has men of varied national and ethnic backgrounds. The nationalities represented are Welsh (of course), English, Scottish, Irish, German, Dutch, Chinese, Polish, First Nations - all of whom count themselves as Canadian. Our Society was formed in 1928 under the name of 'The Tasmanian Cambrian Society', as it was the only Welsh Society in Tasmania at that time. As Launceston also now has a Welsh Society the name has been changed to 'The Welsh Society of Southern Tasmania' as our members come from the Hobart area. Our current membership is about 40 people.
